CANON INFORMATION
CHARACTER NAME: Noboru Gongenzaka
CANON: Yu-Gi-Oh! ARC-V
HISTORY: BAM - Fair Warning they used dub names and dub terms so while the history makes note on any differences it can be. Odd to read.
STRENGTHS:
STEADFASTDetermined
If there is anything to be said about Gongenzaka, it's that he's a determined guy. He pursues his goals stubbornly, and relentlessly; and those goals very typically align with the welfare of others. When it comes to doing what is right, or doing something for those he cares about, there is nothing that can stand in his way- nor anything that can come past him. It might require something of a training montage to figure out what he needs to do, mind...but you can bet that he'll do it.
Such determination, combined with his caring nature, is what drives him to go so far as to break his own personal codes for the sake of others; this is touched on in his Moralistic flaw, but beyond what is noted there Gongenzaka has repeatedly thrown himself into danger for the sake of someone else, too determined to back down from what he feels needs to be done. It doesn't matter what it is, or what it takes; if he's decided there is a reason to pursue it, he won't stop.
Caring
Naturally as someone whose goals are so oriented around the protection and care of others, Gongenzaka is someone who is considered kind; he's a very openhearted individual, unafraid to show his affection for his friends for that matter- though it may cost their spine. He cries openly for them, and for their successes- and when they succeed at his expense, he has nothing but good words and pride for them. In general, his first focus in a situation will be on how those with him are doing- while he certainly steps back if he thinks they can handle something on their own, he wants to make sure that they can first.
Humble/Respectful
Such a willingness to step back requires the ability to be humble, and respecting of others. The most obvious indication of this aspect of Gongenzaka can be seen in how he speaks; he utilizes a very old manner of speech, 'Kono otoko no Gongenzaka' (loosely translated to mean 'I, the man Gongenzaka'), which in essence is a way of saying he is simply 'another person', no better than another. Gongenzaka in the series is known for this, and for actions that would otherwise be considered extreme in modern day (such as bowing face to the ground before another before politely requesting tutelage)- to so much as consider himself in another's debt is something that would require absolute apology and compensation, and he has more than once dramatically proclaimed his failings to be UNFORGIVABLE.
FLAWS:
Self-punishing/Judging
Connected to the bottom-most Strength to Gongenzaka's name, Gongenzaka tends to tackle his seeming failings and flaws in fairly extreme ways. Sometimes, this results in positive change in the long run- such as seeking out the duelist who defeated him to request training. Often however, it results in a fairly self-deprecating episode, with Gongenzaka apologizing profusely to those he has failed to and thereafter dedicating himself to whatever training method he sees fit to ensure such actions never repeat. (We see an entire 'training montage' scattered across numerous episodes, after one single loss where his best friend's school was on the line- these exercises included pulling a boulder over a cliff, and standing directly beneath a waterfall...which are all pretty strenuous things to put yourself through!) This is largely due to these failures focusing around a particular level of standard which he feels he must meet- great expectations, and all that.
Notably, he exercises similar judgment toward other people (though he only rarely uses more than words to do so- and by more than words of course, we mean a Card Game in canon's case); if he feels someone isn't living up to their potential, or putting in the effort toward it, he will point it out...typically his caring nature keeps this in balance, but it can absolutely result in lasting negative judgement on those who simply seem to never care about failing to meet those expectations at all.
Worrying
In addition to the self-punishing actions he has for his own failures, Gongenzaka's care for others- specifically those he's grown close to- outright blind his actions if he isn't careful. The very idea that someone could be in distress while he's unable to rush off and make certain they're alright drives him to act rashly, moving with haste in a desperate effort to get to where he could be needed. While it could hardly be said that he acts in rage (it's actually astoundingly difficult to inspire true rage from Gongenzaka), it's absolutely accurate to say that his worry is crippling.
Moralistic/Inflexible (In the sense of being left stammering/protesting at things)
For all that Gongenzaka strives to uphold the idea of duty and kindness to others, he can be remarkably inflexible- and is absolutely honorbound. While he's quick to admit his failings, it takes time to consider solutions that aren't immediately within his usual 'box' of activities (he didn't initially go to his would-be-teacher in canon, because the idea that he needed to obtain a method of special summoning was simply outside the box of 'the Steadfast Style of Dueling'). Likewise, if someone's solution to an issue is a roundabout method involving say, a performance, or another activity, he'll probably protest about wasting time until it's explained. Time-wasting, and criminal activities in general are something that typically result in sputtered protests or scandalized shouting; and yet, his heart doesn't seem to allow him to put his foot down with more than words if someone keeps refusing...nor does it keep him from following after that someone as they pursue their poor decisions necessarily. And it definitely means no running when that someone is in trouble as a result...
One can see where it's going.
A notable aspect of this particular flaw, he has been shown to work alongside an otherwise corrupt system specifically for the sake of others. This particular instance was a case of prison guards taking bribes to provide adequate food; the bribe in his case was used to provide feeding to his cellmates. So it requires an obvious balance of morals.
Canon Abilities: Located here but in general he's just. EXTREMELY STRONG AND DURABLE?? We're not sure how this happened,
AU INFORMATION
AU CHARACTER NAME: Noboru Gongenzaka
AGE: 14
GRADE: 8 - Same as canon, frighteningly enough
AU BACKSTORY:
Noboru Gongenzaka (henceforth referred to as Gongenzaka, or Gon) was born to a werebear mother, and a human father, in a somewhat isolated dojo in the northern regions of Japan's main island. His mother- presumably because of her own were state- survived this process, and naturally helped raise Gon as best a bitten-were could.
> Gon is raised within the Steadfast Dojo, as the third generation within the main family; the dojo's practices of self-control and meditation are instilled at a fairly young age, and thanks to those around him, has a relatively uneventful early childhood despite his obvious condition.
At the age of 9, while meditating in the woods and working with his bear state under the moon, Gongenzaka meets Yuuya Sakaki for the first time. Despite an interesting first meeting (he is initially mistaken for a familiar), the two become fast friends- to the point that Yuuya visits the dojo somewhat regularly in the future.
Unfortunately, all is not well in the dojo; when he is 11 an age-mate and fellow born were openly declares their thoughts and intentions to contrast the beliefs of the dojo (falling more in line with those celebrating the idea of Nightfall)- while no fight breaks out under the daylight, Gongenzaka is pulled into a tussle after moonset, losing his temper when the other riles him. Though he subdues the other, Yuuya rushes to celebrate and is unfortunately attacked by a still battle-charged Gongenzaka...only spared a fate worse than scarring by the quick actions of Gon's father.
Yuuya fortunately escapes without taking the blight curse, but bears scars from the incident. Gongenzaka throws himself more readily into the dojo's training as a result of the incident, while Yuuya is left to forever remember the true dangers of any lycanthrope- even one with exceptional control over themselves.
At 12 years of age, Yuuya is invited to attend Daybreak Academy. Gongenzaka, not wishing to be separated from his best friend, pleas with his father and mother to be allowed to go. They agree, specifically requesting that he work through the classes with 'the future of the dojo' in mind.
Gongenzaka thus enrolls into the Academy's 6th grade, taking electives focused toward understanding other perspectives of lycanthropy, as well as runic work and alternative methods for working with the condition. He does relatively well in his studies- maintaining good grades, and an otherwise 'clean' reputation thanks to his personally strict regimen for both physical and mental focus. He remains close to Yuuya through this time, attempting to keep his friend on their own course of life when it seems they may slip.
His time until the game begins passes relatively 'typically'; Gongenzaka at this point will not have joined in any missions, and will likely have to be encouraged to do so due to his hesitance around other students with personal bias against lycanthropes.
AU PERSONALITY DEVIATION: When it comes to canon deviation, there is (fortunately) not much involved. The main points of note are:
Gongenzaka's primary focus and personality traits have a more realistic focus; in canon of course, what with the series revolving around duel monsters, things can get a little bit ridiculous on the priorities...or at least in how they're resolved. While Gongenzaka is no fist-fighter, he obviously isn't going to be determining that the only way to settle things 'truly' is in a duel. Rather, he's more likely to try and move things to a situation where a talk becomes unavoidable.
And, well, if push comes to shove maybe he will shove back, but his attitudes remain the same in that he'll put his focus on defending and safely subduing/restraining the other instead of trying to pummel them into the earth.
Connected to this, his desire to bring the dojo forward into the future is a matter that won't need to be driven into his head- he knows full well that things change with time, and the dojo will need to change as well if they want to improve things when it comes to the lycanthrope's effect on the world.
Certain exaggerated emotions are subdued to a point- this 'to a point' is a bit key, as the fact is, after the first half of the first season (where the series starts to pick up its more Serious tone), Gongenzaka isn't bursting into tears because he's so touched by something. Not often anyway. While he'll still do it, it'll be more rare- much like how his Crushing Hugs are typically reserved for Yuuya (and that one IS canon)
While Gongenzaka still won't use contractions, and absolutely still sounds like an old fart, his trademark phrase- 'kono otoko no Gongenzaka' ('I, the man Gongenzaka' or 'This man, Gongenzaka', roughly)- won't be said so much. There's no real translation into English (or French for that matter), and since his AU incarnation can actually speak or somewhat speak both, it doesn't make sense for him to use it!
Beyond this, he's still the same emotional, caring giant of a boy who might just put a bit too high a bar on his personal standards when it comes to being a good citizen.
RACE: Born Lycanthrope - Werebear
SECRET SOCIETY: Gongenzaka hails from the 'Gongenzaka Dojo'- a very small 'clan' of sorts located in Japan. It was founded by his grandfather's family after the family head in question was bitten and subsequently infected- by this point, Gongenzaka's father had already been born, which is why his dad is still human.
The dojo was founded with the idea of utilizing practices such as meditation and traditional kata with defensive focus to control and manage the instincts of their nightly forms. Practitioners of the 'Steadfast' way typically wear sashes across their shoulders, and iron geta as a symbol of this restraint, and while there can be no true escape from the full moon frenzy of a werebear form, they have at least relative control over how violent those forms become on other nights.
Alongside the physical practices, the Dojo enforces the idea of power and strength being used to defend and protect those in need; and more importantly, doing so without being forced to land a blow themselves. While Steadfast practitioners are certainly capable of fighting, they are typically trained to use more 'human' methods (Gongenzaka in particular has been known to improvise by using his geta in a manner not unlike a tonfa), and encouraged to only do so if absolutely necessary.
By the time Gongenzaka's father became the head of the dojo, a small following of other lycanthropes across the country would gather there- primarily bears, due to the species similarity, though there are a small few with differing animals as their infection base. Alongside this, he personally sought out training in Runic Arts for one specific purpose; treating those recently bitten.
Due to this, the dojo has about as many runic practitioners (Gongenzaka Sr. included) as there are Non-bear lycans, who are focused in emergency treatment of the recently cursed.
As the son of the Dojo head, Gongenzaka himself is expected to eventually take over the school. While this should not occur for a number of years (as far as anyone is aware anyway), it still places a lot of pressure to study what could benefit the dojo and further help the goals for the Steadfast clan. Part of Gongenzaka's attending Daybreak connects to this- it is the hope of his family that he can take what teachings there are and use them to further help the efforts of controlling their blighted forms, or at least preventing infection where possible.
POWERS:
As a natural born Lycanthrope further focused within the Steadfast ways, Gongenzaka as a Werebear has a fair amount of control over himself even while in 'bear state'. Part of the teachings encourage taking form while exercising control over it; as such, he's capable of quite a lot within that state (including speech!).
Unfortunately, a loss of temper equates to a loss of control- while Gongenzaka is supremely level headed, the full moon becomes a fairly risky period of time and requires more meditation and exercise to keep in check. During the full moon, focus on such things as speech is also somewhat difficult- as it's the time where the blight is at its strongest.
Gongenzaka's werebear state is...well, best described as 'Gon, if he was a bear'. He doesn't get that much bigger, all things considered; though he does naturally gain the claws and jaws of the beast, becoming covered in fur and more readily able to run on all fours. His physical strength is naturally impressive in this state as well- but that's hardly surprising given what he is.
During the day, Gongenzaka is still fairly formidable when it comes to strength and skill; training at the dojo focuses on building strong durability against most forces, so he can take a lot of punches. (Naturally, these are still human limits though- he's not about to just get back up if someone stabs him with a sword or something)
As well, he has above-average senses- in particular, his sense of smell and hearing are closer to that of his bear form's.
HOUSING: No...preference? It would be preferred if he could be matched with someone who isn't immediately hostile toward lycanthropes however; it'd just be ICly easier on all sides involved that way oops.
